The Judicial Magistrate First Class at Mapusa has directed Calangute police to file an FIR in connection with the reported theft of copper wires worth Rs 6.2 crore from the grounded River Princess.
It may be recalled that two persons, Ketan Govekar of St Inez, Panjim and Kashinath Shetye of Ribandar, had informed Calangute police earlier this month that the theft had taken place after the inspection by various government departments like Tourism, GCRZMA, Navigation, Panchayat, Inland waterways and salvage companies.
Govekar and Shetye had alleged that the theft may have taken place in connivance with vested interests, thereby causing losses to the government and the exchequer.
They had asked Calangute Police to take immediate cognizance of the complaint and file an FIR under Sections 378, 379, 461, 462, 120B and 34 and also under Sections of Prevention of Corruption Act and conduct a thorough inquiry in the matter.
A copy of the complaint had also been forwarded to the North Goa Superintendent of Police to initiate action in the matter if the Calangute Police had failed to investigate the case.
While Calangute police had heard about the order of the Mapusa JMFC, PI Manjunath Dessai told Herald that he was yet to receive a copy of the JMFC’s order.
