MARGAO: Village Panchayat Carmona has decided to issue show cause notices to the house owners who release sewage/dirty waters into nullahs and drains violating the provisions of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act and the Health Act.

At a meeting, the Carmona Panchayat informed that they have come across instances whereby house owners deliberately have open pig type toilets releasing into the nullahs and also releasing dirty water.
“We have inspected sites along with the Health Department officials and action will be initiated by both as per relevant provisions of the Panchayat Raj Act and the Health Act under which the electricity and water connections can be disconnected for violation,” said Sarpanch of Carmona Allwyn George.
“The panchayat will go even to the extent of withdrawing the occupancy certificates of these houses for the violations. Plugging of all the openings will also be considered. This issue is serious as Goa has been declared open defecation free (ODF),” said Carmona Sarpanch.
Some places nullahs have been used as sewage reservoirs with dirty sewage and water flowing which can cause a health risk or cause dengue and epidemic outbreak.
So far the panchayat has inspected five cases and show cause will be issued next week in coordination with the Health Department.
In the meantime, Sarpanch informed that the Department of Tourism had withdrawn the registration of a hotel and the panchayat will issue notices to them to remove all their signboards in the village and elsewhere subsequent to this letter received from the Department of Tourism.
