Shoddy road work, failure to repair drains leave Morjim roads flooded

PERNEM: Despite having extra time to complete pre-monsoon works due to the delayed onset of monsoon, the authorities’ lethargic attitude has led to severe waterlogging on the roads of Morjim. The repair work on the gutters has been left incomplete, resulting in floods.

The situation worsened as the roads were dug up for laying underground power cables, causing the drainage system to collapse. The lives of motorists are now at risk, as they are unable to identify potholes due to the flooded roads, leading them to be roughly jolted and vulnerable to accidents.

Areas namely Gaudewada, Newwada, Pokewada, Mardiwada, Madhawada and Natoji Varnawada have been affected by waterlogging. In some instances, water even entered locals’ houses.

Earlier, MLA Jit Arolkar had conducted a meeting with the officials involved and instructed them to complete the pre-monsoon works on time. However, the lack of planning and failure to meet the deadline has resulted in inconvenience for the local population.

During a meeting of the Morjim Panchayat’s waste disposal committee, former deputy sarpanch Amit Shetgaonkar highlighted the need for the PWD to take better care of the roads.

“What kind of permit was given while digging the roads? The PWD officials did not inspect the roads even once when the work was going on. The locals, shopkeepers and the motorists now have to pay the price for no reason,” said Shetgaonkar.
