PORVORIM: Due to the Supreme Court order maintaining the status-quo on the proposed Mopa Airport, the commissioning of the first phase of the project has been delayed to 2021.
“As per the Concession Agreement, the first phase was supposed to be commissioned in Sept 2020. However, due to the status quo order by the Supreme Court, the construction work will get delayed and therefore it will be commissioned in 2021,” Sawant said, replying to a question tabled by MGP MLA Sudin Dhavalikar.
To another question tabled by Congress MLA Pratapsing Rane, Sawant added that 14.28 per cent of the physical work on the airport project has been completed. He added that prior to the stoppage of work on the project as per SC’s order, dated January 19, 2019, more than 1,000 people were working at the site and that majority of them were locals. Further, an Aviation Skill Development Center will be set up by the Concessionaire at ITI Pernem to train Goans. He said that once Mopa Airport becomes operational there will be job opportunities in different areas namely Civil works, Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing, Security & Vigilance, Firefighting, Baggage & Cargo handling, Porter Services, Housekeeping Services and Other ancillary jobs connected with airport operations.
