PANJIM: Even as the Goa State Pollution Control Board filed criminal complaints before judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) Vasco against officials of South West Port Limited (SWPL) and Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) for excess handling of coal at the port last year, the Congress party has questioned the government for not taking action against two companies involved in importing ‘low grade’ coal for the State.
Party spokesperson Sankalp Amonkar, addressing a press conference at Congress House on Sunday, also alleged that the government is misleading the people of Goa on the coal issue.
“The coal imported by Adani and Jindal is of no use in Goa. The coal imported is actually diverted to the companies in Karnataka and what is left in Goa is the low grade ore. The substandard coal is rejected by other States. It is instead used in Goa and results in dust pollution,” he alleged.
Amonkar recalled Goa government’s claim made last year that opposing coal would lead to shortage of power. He alleged that this statement of the government is misleading.
