PANJIM: Taking serious cognizance of over-speeding by ore transporting trucks, the Directorate of Mines and Geology (DMG) has debarred nearly 538 registered trucks from undertaking any trip from Monday for violating speed limit.
DMG has now fixed 40 kmph as speed limit for both loaded and unloaded trucks.
Director Mines Prasanna Acharya said that this crucial step has been taken following the fatal accident in Curchorem involving an ore transporting truck, which killed two women and injured an infant.
“We have debarred 538 trucks from Monday for violating speed limits. SMS has already been sent to the driver on the mobile number registered with us,” Acharya added.
“In addition, reports of violations have been sent to all the companies to justify the decision,” he added.
Around 6120 trucks with global positioning system (GPS) are registered with the department. On an average, the trucks undertake 4000 trips per day.
Acharya has warned similar action against trucks transporting minerals, laterite stones and sand. The registration process for these trucks will commence soon.
Following the fatal accident at Curchorem, the locals were against ore transportation in the area. DMG has already suspended the truck operation licence from this season.
