MARGAO: The Deputy Collector Ajit Panchwadkar inspected a building site on Wednesday after the locals complained that the developer’s negligence was posing a threat to the existing building. The area besides Nalanda apartments has been excavated by the Kurtarkar Real Estates for a complex and while doing so has damaged the retaining and the compound wall of the apartment on June 17, after heavy rains lashed Goa.
The locals demanded that the builder keep his word and secure the wall as soon as possible. The apartment dwellers fear that the deep excavation will weaken the foundation of the already 25year-old building.
“The developer was warned by his engineer that the 4 meter deep excavation besides the old building will loosen the soil in the rains and will cause the earth to slide beneath. The builder has negligently and hastily dug up the site,” told Ramdas Kakodkar.
Rajendra Satarkar, Chairman of the Nalanda Apartment Society says, “We and the authorities have a tendency to ignore problems in the beginning and run around when a tragedy strikes. By having this inspection we want to take precaution from any further problems”
“The developer is building a hotel besides our building flouting all the norms and ignoring all the risks nature poses in rains. We won’t let them put the safety of our house at stake,” said Abhishek Kakodkar.
The residents have demanded that the developer rebuilds the compound and retaining wall of the buildings at the earliest.
