PANJIM: The education department has decided to put its vacant educational premises located all across the State to use, by proposing to rent.
Close to a 100 such vacant buildings have been identified and will be let out on rent or lease depending on the nature of requests that come for the same.
According to officials in the education department, the vacant buildings once housed government primary schools, and government secondary and higher secondary institutions.
“We will see what kind of requests come for utilisation of the buildings,” said education director Anil Powar stating further that a scheme is being worked out for this purpose and will be placed before the cabinet for its approval.
“We will mostly consider giving the vacant premises’ for sports clubs or groups engaged in social work,” he said ruling out plans of giving the premises’ for commercial purpose.
The education department has made an inventory of the vacant buildings all across the State some of which date back to the 1960s.
The taluka of Salcete seems to have the highest number of vacant government educational premises numbering 24 followed by Ponda with 17 and Quepem with 14 such premises.
Powar said that the structures are still in good condition and could be put to use instead of leaving them in abandoned state.
