MARGAO: The Freedom Fighters’ Association of Margao has written to the Margao Municipal Council chairperson Babita Angle to ensure that the historic Lohia Maidan is not misused.
The request came following a Herald report, which exposed a group of tourists enjoying liquor at the historic Maidan last week.
In their letter to the MMC, the association alleged that the Maidan is being defecated by the rickshaw drivers, cabmen, shop owners and pedestrians by urinating near the statue. They further alleged, “A hotel has constructed a shed for preparing food stuff by “misusing” the maidan. In the absence of a security guard, these people misuse the maidan for conducting illegal activities. They dump garbage and other waste near the power transformer. Tourists enjoy drinking liquor at the historic place.”
Citing these illegalities, the Association has requested to appoint security guard and to install CCTVs.
The Association has also demanded that the compound wall height be raised and awareness banners be put. They also demanded that the place be illuminated and called upon the police to take strict action against the culprits.
