MARGAO: Margao’s Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) may get back into functional mode only after the election code of conduct is relaxed. The reason: Margao and Municipal Council will work out a system for their repairs after the code ends.
MMC that is responsible for the maintenance of the CCTVs has failed to execute any maintenance contracts for the repairs and restoration of the system.
South Goa District Collector Swapnil Naik said, “The CCTV cameras will be back to power after the code of conduct ends. The CCTVs had been handed over by MP’s to the Municipalities and some of th municipalities had agreed to maintain them, others have washed off their hands off repairs. We have written to the government to work out a sharing system to be worked out between the MMC and Margao Police which we expect to happen soon,”
The CCTV system had gone off months ago which has made Margao vulnerable to security threats and drastically reduced traffic control, leading to demands to get the CCTV cameras working.
The Collector also said that action has been taken and he sees a solution coming soon after the election process ends.
There are at least 34 CCTV cameras that have completely gone off and sources said MMC is the only municipality not to have entered into an annual maintenance contract for the CCTVs.
