PANJIM: The new Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Panjim will be elected by the corporators on March 15, with the Corporation of the City of Panaji Commissioner Deepak Desai approving the election date.
The one-year term of Mayor Surendra Furtado and Deputy Mayor Lata Parekh ends on March 15. The Atanasio Monserrate backed panel has a majority in the corporation with 17 seats in the 30-member City Corporation. The BJP supported panel is in the opposition with 13 corporators.
The State Assembly results to be declared on March 11 could play a major role in the Mayoral election, as the fate of Monserrate who is contesting from Panjim – a BJP bastion for the last 25 years – could be a deciding factor on who becomes the next Mayor.
As per sources, Furtado is again likely to be the Monserrate panel’s Mayoral candidate.
