MARGAO: Fisheries officials on Tuesday visited Cuncolim market to take stock of the ongoing battle between the fish market vendors and the three vendors who sell fish in a vehicle along the road side in the town.
After interaction with the two warring sides, the officials told the media that they will submit a report to the Fisheries Director on the problem. “We have visited the town following instructions from the Directorate of Fisheries. We have made certain observations and the same will be communicated to the Fisheries Director”, the official said.
While the fish vendors strongly opposed any sale of fish outside the fish market, they, however, made it clear that they have no objections if the three vendors sell fish inside the market on condition they do not sell in kilograms. “We are opposed to sale of fish in kilograms. If this condition is acceptable to the three vendors, they are welcome to do business inside the market”, remarked a fish vendor.
One of the three vendors, however, pointed out that they cannot be barred from selling fish outside the market as the pay the sopo to the local Municipal body.
Meanwhile, sources in the Cuncolim Municipal Council informed that the controversy over the sale of fish in the town may figure at the Council meeting scheduled later this week. The Municipality has so far not initiated any against the vendors selling fish in kilograms outside the fish market and have asked the fish market vendors to submit a representation to the Civic body for action.
