PONDA: In the absence of a proper garbage disposal site, the Curti-Khandepar Panchayat has found it difficult to manage tonnes of garbage generated daily in the village.
Since the last several days, many places in the panchayat jurisdiction have been seen littered with garbage and no sign of the authority making any effort to lift and dispose the accumulated garbage.
It may be recalled that in June 2012, the garbage contractor quit after the landfill site along the NH-4A at Curti was abandoned following public outrage. Since then, the panchayat has struggled to manage garbage collection and disposal on its own.
“Within a day or two, we will float a tender and we hope to appoint a contractor by the end of this month. In the tender contract, we would also include a condition wherein the contractor will have to identify a site on his own to dispose off the garbage,” said Curti-Khandepar Deputy Sarpanch, Nagesh Naik.
“Bins will be provided and residents will be urged to segregate waste. The wet waste will be collected everyday whereas dry waste, including plastic, will be collected once a week or once in a fortnight. We will also appoint another contractor to look after the collection of plastic waste,” Naik added.
