PANJIM: As the New Year 2024 approaches, the impending spirit of celebration is overshadowed by reports of clear violations of noise regulations at Mandrem and Morjim beaches, both of which have been declared as silence zones in the State. Despite stringent regulations and a High Court ban on loud music in the turtle conservation area, revellers persist on disturbing the tranquillity of the villages, well into the night.
In the quiet locale of Junaswada, Mandrem, an alarming incident unfolded last Friday as loud music echoed through the night, exceeding beyond the permissible hours. Notably, a Mandrem panchayat member was reportedly in attendance at the event, raising eyebrows within the community.
The beaches which have been declared as turtle conservation areas, are subject to strict regulations and loud music is prohibited there. Further, concerns have been raised as loud parties, with blaring music, continue to be hosted near Junaswada garden.
Locals are expressing scepticism about the efficacy of the local panchayat and other government agencies in enforcing the High Court’s order. Two hotels adjacent to Junaswada garden were identified as hosting events with loud music, prompting questions about the enforcement of noise restrictions in the region.
Pernem Deputy Collector Deepak Vaingankar, revealed that temporary permission can be sought for hosting events with loud music. However, to his knowledge, no such permissions had been granted for the reported parties.
Pernem police inspector urged residents to report instances of unauthorized parties or loud music. “If the party is going on without permission or if a hotel is playing loud music, then the locals should contact the police. We will immediately stop the music and take action against those involved,” Pernem PI Sachin Lokare said.
Meanwhile, the presence of a panchayat member at the event has ignited concerns about the panchayat’s stance on such illegal parties. Despite official communications to law enforcement agency no action was taken raising concerns about the panchayat’s stance on the illegal activity due to presence of the panchayat member at the party.
