MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council on Tuesday claimed that they have put required mechanism in place for the town and are ready for the monsoon season.
Chairperson Ryan Braganza informed, “All the desilting works of the gutters and major drains are completed. The drains at various areas such as near Usapkar Bakery, Kuchelim and the market which used to face water logging during continues rains are desilted and hopefully we don’t expect flooding to take place this monsoon. Also a team is formed including an engineer and other staff which will look after all the required emergency works.”

It may be recalled that the Mapusa market which is in a low lying area witnessed heavy flooding with all the water flowing down from the hills during the last monsoon due to the failure to complete the de-silting of the gutters and drains and with no proper source for the water to flow. The water used to enter the shops in the market apart from affecting the business of street vendors. However, this year, while taking the advantage of lockdown, after many years, the Mapusa municipality was in a position to desilt all the gutters especially in the market area and clear the drains for free flow of water.
Meanwhile, a meeting was conveyed by MMC Chief Officer Kabir Shirgaokar in the presence of chairperson, council members, official from Mapusa Police, Traffic Cell, Electricity Department, Health Department and Fire and Emergency Service to discuss the pre-monsoon preparations for Mapusa.
The officials from the different departments gave their inputs on the actions required to avoid flooding, smooth movement of vehicles, cutting of dangerous trees, power supply and others issues in the municipal jurisdiction.
The Mapusa municipality has provided 18 labourers which will work in shifts along with the Fire Service during this monsoon and also assured to provide earth moving machinery (JCB) to the Fire Station in times of landslides.
