MARGAO: Leader of the Opposition and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat on Thursday demanded that the government should immediately round up all beggars across the State and accommodate them in the shelter homes.
The demanded comes after two beggars succumbed to COVID-19. The town residents fear that the virus may spread further on account of the homeless people occupying public places across the roads, temporary shelters in open spaces etc. It is pertinent to note that Herald had earlier reported on how beggars have been moving around freely in the town.
The Margao MLA said, “I had a meeting with the South Collector on the issue today, after reports of various homeless people moving around Margao and other parts of Goa appeared in the local media. I also received calls from various citizens across the State complaining about beggars assembling at various traffic signals. I have urged the Collector to take immediate action in this regard and create a shelter home to accommodate all the people”.
“I have also spoken to the Member Secretary to clear all the illegal shelters, which have come up on SGPDA ground” he informed. He demanded that the government needs to make further arrangements to send all these people to their native States as soon as possible.
