Margao pay-parking finds no favour with city fathers

MARGAO: Traffic department’s proposal to introduce pay parking in the commercial capital seems to have not gone down well with Margao city fathers. While the proposal has failed to find a mention in the Council meeting scheduled early next week, many a councillor felt the government should charge parking fees only after creating the necessary parking infrastructure. Some of the councillors demanded to know whether the traffic department’s proposal would in any way help add an inch of parking space in the city.

Councillor Tito Cardozo wondered what the Traffic department is seeking to achieve by suggesting pay parking for four wheelers parked on the city roads. “I am of the strong opinion that the government should charge fees only after putting in place parking infrastructure. I fail to understand how the government intends to charge parking fees on vehicles parking on the city roads”, he said.
Cardozo said the Margao civic body had developed parking space opposite the KTC bus stand for two-wheeler parking, but lamented that a portion of the land has not been put to use for reasons best known to the civic authorities.
MMC Chief Gonzaco Rebello said the Traffic department’s pay parking proposal has not found a mention in the Municipal meeting scheduled next week since the proposal had come to the civic body at the eleventh hour.
“I am of the opinion that the parking fees should be levied on vehicles only after a multi-storey parking lot is put in place in the city. Let us wait see the opinion of the city fathers on the issue”, he added.
