MARGAO: The six-month intensive drive by Mission Rabies in the State has concluded with the NGO sterilising and vaccinating around 20,000 dogs during the period.
Sources said that Mission Rabies has now submitted a proposal to the government for a three year exercise in the State for effective handling of the stray dog menace.
Of the 20,000 dogs sterilised and vaccinated across the State, around 15,000 were from South Goa, including 7000 from the jurisdiction of Margao Municipal Council.
In appreciation of its yeoman service, the Margao Municipal Council awarded a certificate of appreciation to Mission Rabies for rendering service to the State of Goa in general and to the Margao civic body in particular towards the Animal Birth Control Programme and the Anti-Rabies drive.
MMC Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello said that Mission Rabies made a huge contribution to the ABC programme by educating around 55,000 children across the State and bringing down the number of dog bites and rabies deaths in Goa.
Mission Rabies Co-ordinator and former MMC Chairperson Savio Coutinho appreciated the role played by Mission Rabies programme not only in Margao but on the city outskirts during the last six months.
