The Margao Municipal Council on Monday cracked a whip against illegal hutments and encroachments in the Commercial capital, but many hutments along the ring road from the Aquem side of the railway station to Rawanfond were left untouched by the authorities.
Around 55 huts and other encroachments were razed down in today’s operation, which began this morning and ended later in the evening.
Illegal hutments near the wholesale fish market and on the ring road and other places were razed down by a team of municipal officials throughout Monday. An encroachment by a kiosk at the old bus stand was also razed down in today’s operation.
This is the first time in recent times that the Margao Civic body has cracked a whip against illegal hutments. In fact, the Civic body had been accused by the citizens for turning a blind eye to the shanties mushrooming across the city.
Last month, Margao Municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho had complained of huts and shanties mushrooming in his Colmorod ward right under the nose of the concerned authorities.
Meanwhile, hutments along the ring road from the Margao railway station to Rawanfond Bridge, especially at Tollebandh, were left untouched by the Civic body.
Questions are raised whether the axe will fall on these hutments as the monsoons have set in this evening, even though the Civic authorities assured that action would be initiated against all illegal hutments in the city.
