MMC sends proposal to DMA to set up mixed waste digesters at Margao, Fatorda

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has sent a proposal to the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) for setting up two mixed waste digesters at Margao and Fatorda.
The MMC received a proposal for setting up of two mixed waste digesters at two different locations in its jurisdiction. The digesters of 10-tonne capacity each are aimed at taking care of the waste that is generated or strewn around the various black spots in Margao and Fatorda. The digesters are proposed to be set up at an estimated cost of Rs 19.9 crore. The garbage dumped at several dark spots within the MMC jurisdiction in Margao and Fatorda has piled up. Despite the MMC removing the mix waste at the dark spots in its jurisdiction, the garbage menace continues at these spots. With the MMC already handling plastic waste, there was a need to handle the mixed waste too.
MMC engineer Agostinho Mesquita said, “Once the proposal is cleared, the locations will be finalised and the machinery will be set up.”
MMC vice-chairperson Tito Cardozo said the need for setting up mixed waste digesters has been felt due to the heaps of waste dumped at these black spots and along the roadsides.
It is pertinent to note that the application filed by Citizens for Sonsoddo and Claude Alvares in the High Court has mentioned the various failures of the MMC in handling waste and managing solid waste in the town.
