VASCO: Incessant rains over the last few days have created havoc in Vasco. Incidents of landslides with boulders damaging building columns, collapse of a balcony of an old building besides reports of overflowing sewage from chambers and water-logging across Mormugao taluka were reported in the past 24 hours.
On Monday afternoon a huge boulder from the Vaddem hillock in Vasco came down crashing and damaged the column portion of the multi-storied Recardo Enclave apartment located below.
Residents attribute excessive construction activity atop the hill as a cause behind the land slide. They also claimed despite demand for a retaining wall, the concerned builder who sold them the flats failed to provide the same.
This issue was discussed during the meeting called by Mormugao Deputy Collector where MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik raised his serious concerns regarding the land slide incident in Vaddem and blamed the concerned builder for not providing retaining wall to prevent landslides. He said henceforth MMC would ask for strict compliance of retaining wall wherever required before given NOC/licence for such multi-dwelling projects.
Similarly during the early hours of Monday morning, one extended portion of the wall of Pereira Chambers located near Tourist Hostel in Vasco came down crashing and damaged three air conditioning units. No one however was injured in the incident; loss is yet to be estimated.
Another issue that has left the citizens to face severe hardships is the overflowing of sewage from chambers. In one such incident reported at Desterro, citizens slammed the PWD sewage department officials for not resolving the issue of routine sewage overflow from chambers in their area for last few years. They alleged the concerned PWD sewage department officials are deliberately neglecting to address the issue and demanded action against the officials concerned.
