A morning walk on the sandy shores of Miramar proved costly for a Hyderabad couple who drowned after a wave pulled them in, but four others accompanying them were saved by some morning walkers and staff members of a hotel nearby.
Panjim police, who were informed of the incident at 8.35 am, said Bulusu Srinivasa Kameswara Sharma, 45, his wife Bulusu Jyotsna, 38, and the four others were pulled out of the water and rushed to the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim by a 108 ambulance. The incident occurred at around 8 am towards the Campal side. It was stated that life guards were not on duty then along the stretch.
Giving a witness account of the incident, they said Srinivasa was lifeless when he was brought out of the water while his wife was talking when they both were being taken to hospital. Both may have died on the way to hospital, they added.
Till late afternoon, out of the four who were saved two were discharged while the remaining two were under observation.
Police said the deceased couple and the four were part of five families who had arrived from Hyderabad to the State yesterday and checked into Miramar Residency at Miramar, here.
They said inquiries had revealed the six had decided to go for a walk on the shore and somewhere in between may have got tempted to venture into the water. Rescuers told us they saw the man in waist-deep water when suddenly he was hit by the wave, they mentioned. After the wave lapped them up, two Panjimites who were on their morning walks and three other bathers rushed to their rescue and later help also came from some Corporation of City of Panaji workers who incidentally were around besides some Mariott hotel staff members and other locals.
