PANJIM: The implementation of new Motor Vehicles Act has been deferred yet again, this time till after the Assembly elections of 2022. Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho said the file to postpone the implementation till April 2022 has been sent to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
“An informal decision by the government has been taken to postpone the new MV Act implementation till the elections next year. A file in this regard is with the CM,” Godinho said on Monday.

The term of the current Goa Assembly expires on March 15, 2022. Elections are expected before that.
Goa is among a few States yet to adopt the provisions of the MV (Amendment) Act a year and half after fines were revised. Every decision to implement the stringent law is pushed further.
The Act levies hefty penalties ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 40,000 (including repeat offence) and even Rs 1 lakh for offences committed by manufacturer, importer and dealer of vehicles. The Motor Vehicles Amendment Act was passed in 2019 and while most other States have issued the notification, Goa lags behind owing to objections from various stakeholders over the hefty fines. The Transport Minister’s proposal for quick implementation of the law was declined by the cabinet a couple of times until a notification was finally released in April directing enforcement from May 1, 2021.
