PANJIM: PSI Rahul Dhamshekar, who was with the Ponda police station, was suspended by police headquarters Saturday, on receipt of the report from the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
Dhamshekar, was arrested after a ‘sting’ operation was conducted by civil society activists and a trap laid by Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 to effect a compromise in an assault case.
Dhamshekar was remanded to three days police custody.
Officials said that that the PSI had allegedly demanded Rs 36,000, of which Rs 25,000 had been paid to him as he was being filmed. They then approached the ACB which nabbed him.
Subsequently, ACB officials searched his residence at Quepem.
Since 2005, three cases are made out against police personnel. In 2007, PSI Sandhya Gupta and police constable Rajesh Warang were arrested while accepting bribes. The charge sheet against Sandhya was filed in April this year. In 2008, PSI Vilesh Durbhatkar and head constable Shyam Gawas of Valpoi police station were arrested while taking bribes for returning identity cards taken. The case is still under investigation.
