CURCHOREM: Quepem Municipal Council (QMC) Chairperson Dayesh Naik was arrested on charges of threatening some people and disturbing peace at Cotto-Amona, Quepem, late Friday night.
According to Quepem PI Ram Asare, they received a call from a person stating that he along with his friends went to Cotto to meet his friends, when Dayesh Naik intercepted their vehicles and questioned them.
PI Asare further informed that police rushed to the site and called both the parties to the police station. Naik was later arrested under Section 151 and police is investigating the case.
When contacted, Dayesh Naik refuted the allegations and said police took him to the police station from his residence.
According to Quepem MLA Chandrakant Kavlekar, Dayesh Naik saw some people in four vehicles behind his house at Cotto-Amona, Quepem, at about 8 pm. “However, when Naik went to question them what they were doing at the site, argument took place between both the parties,” informed Kavlekar.
“Police rushed to the spot and took both the parties to the police station. Police kept Dayesh Naik at the police station till about 10.20 pm and later he was arrested,” added Kavlekar.
Meanwhile, South Goa Congress candidate Reginaldo Lourenco termed as police dadagiri the arresting of Quepem Municipal Chairperson Dahesh Naik late on Friday evening.
Reginaldo said the police arrested Naik on trumped up charges, and added that the police has laid their hands on the QMC chairperson since they could not arrest MLA Vijai Sardesai.
He alleged that the police were acting directly at the behest of the Home Minster, and lamented that the deputy collector played truant when they had moved his office for bail this evening. “It is sad and shocking that the authorities were not ready to release Naik on bail, asking us to follow the procedure when it was clear that it was a conspiracy to detain Naik to ensure that the BJP had a free run,” he alleged.
Naik was later moved to the Margao police lock up late on Friday night as a precautionary measure.
Fatorda MLA, Vijai Sardesai too condemned the arrest of Naik calling it a twisted justice being practiced by the State machinery under the garb of implementing election rules and the Model Code of Conduct. He flayed the police for detaining Naik
