PONDA: During the monsoons and post-monsoon, the government excused itself from repairing the pothole-ridden roads in Ponda and across the State saying it was raining rhinos and hippopotamus. It now has no excuse.
However, nearly ten days have passed since the rains subsided and still the condition of the roads in Ponda remains the same; and the pothole ridden roads continue to wreak chaos.
Ponda residents derisively say that commuting on Ponda roads is like doing vehicle stunts in a circus.
The roads in Ponda were damaged after they were dug up for constructing sewerage chambers and for other developments works. This condition became worse during the rains.
The heavy rains turned the potholes into craters. And to avoid landing into the craters, vehicles move zigzag; this leads to frequent chaos and traffic jams.
The bad roads have also led to many serious accidents, some of which were fatal. Besides, commuting on these roads has caused health problems. “I commute on these roads daily, due to which I am suffering from back pain,” a motorist Hanumanth Naik said.
“The road at Almeida High School is full of potholes and is a death trap for motorists. This road needs to be repaired immediately as the lives of over one thousand students and thousands of locals are in danger,” he said
Though materials have been brought to repair the road at Almeida High School, the work is yet to start.
Meanwhile, the Pondaits are hoping that the roads in the town will be hot-mixed soon.
