PANJIM, SEPT 23
The Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) has been facing tough time in dealing with city garbage in the absence of its own Solid Waste Treatment Plant (SWMP) and, is now likely to be burdened with garbage from Taleigao village panchayat (TVP) as well.
The TVP has demanded that CCP to take care of its garbage (six trucks of mix garbage per day) as compensation for using a landfill site that falls within the jurisdiction of the TVP.
“We have received a proposal from TVP demanding that we take care of solid waste generated in Taleigao,” said a CCP officer on the condition of anonymity.
Currently, the CCP does not have facility of its own to burry residual waste and, will have to wait until the quarry located in La Marvel Colony, Dona Paula is made ready for use.
The CCP will discuss the proposal in its Friday meeting but it’s a foregone conclusion that CCP will not turn reject the proposal.
And though all this while TVP permitted CCP to use its site for free of cost it is now set to extract price with interest.
On hindsight, the CCP officer said it would have been better if TVP were to charge CCP for using its site.
The CCP dispose off about 55-60 ton of waste every day. It has composting units to treat bio –degradable waste but the problem is two-three trucks of non–bio-degradable waste for which it has been compelled to use Taleigao site.
