MARGAO: Tension prevailed in Dicarpale after a local youth, Jason Vales, was assaulted with a hockey stick by another local youth following an argument, on Monday. Villagers later blocked the main road, demanding the arrest of the accused, and the police had to resort to a lathi-charge to bring the situation under control.
However, the irate villagers went on to destroy two motorcycles and two four-wheelers of the accused, and also ransacked and destroyed a bar and restaurant owned by the family of the accused.
According to information, trouble erupted after the accused got into an argument with Vales near a ros omelette stall, following which the latter was assaulted with a hockey stick.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Dinraj Govekar and the police inspectors of Margao, Maina-Curtorim and Cuncolim were present at the site in the night to try and break the crowd. A police constable who was injured in the commotion was taken to Hospicio.
