PANJIM: Directorate of Mines and Geology on Tuesday suspended two of its officials who were earlier arrested by the Ponda police for allegedly cheating six jobseekers to the tune of Rs 40 lakh, last week, with the promise of a government job.
Assistant data entry operators Siddhesh Borkar, of Malbhat, Margao and lower divisional clerk Ramchandra Verlekar, of Shiroda have been suspended. Both the accused were released on bail by a local court.
The accused were arrested following a complaint lodged by one Damodar Naik, who had paid the accused to get a government job.
According to the police information the duo had extracted the amounts from the six as follows — Naik (Rs 5 lakh), N C D’Costa (Rs 10 lakh), Rama Sadekar (Rs 8 lakh), Uday Naik (Rs 10 lakh), Suhas Wainikar (Rs 5 Lakh) and Prashant Nataio (Rs 2 lakh).
Offence against both the accused was registered under Section 420 (cheating) and Section 506 (criminal intimidation) read with Section 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code.
