PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar promised to introduce value based education in schools from next academic year even as he promised to introduce an ‘accurate’ Goan history in school textbooks.
Delivering the concluding lecture of the Luis de Menezes Bragança lecture series, on ‘value based education’ Parrikar made it a point to stress that education was not just a ‘literacy camp’ but rather a wholesome growth that a child learns in school.
“From next year, the curriculum will include value-based education in the education system. Else education without values will make schools like literacy camps. Just as ice is cold, and we do not specifically need to add the adjective ‘cold’ to ice, the same way when we refer to education we need to know that it is value-based,” Parrikar said.
He however added that introducing such a system would not absolve the primary role of the parents in bringing up the child in ethics.
“Parents have the biggest role in introducing their children to the idea of ethics, fairness and justice. This is not to replace that,” Parrikar said.
Speaking on the issue of Goan history, Parrikar said that it would be his effort to introduce in the curriculum the ‘correct’ history of the state, by taking into consideration all the stakeholders.
“Our children need to be taught the correct history of the state. This will be introduced by taking into consideration educationists, historians and other stakeholders of the state,” Parrikar said.
The lecture was chaired by Prof Madhav Kamat. On the occasion a statue of Francisco de Luis Menezes Bragança was unveiled by the chief minister.
Both the chief minister and governor attended the lecture series notwithstanding protests from the Disability Rights Association of Goa which had called for a boycott given that the refurbished institute isn’t disability friendly, which is a violation of the Act.
The lectures have come to a close with the lecture by Parrikar.
