MARGAO: The Water Resources Department on Saturday commenced demolition of the nullah constructed near the Maruti Temple along the Eastern Bypass even though Convener of Shadow Council for Margao Savio Coutinho expressed his unhappiness over the scope of demolition carried out.
Assistant Engineer of WRD Mario Rebello disclosed that they will be demolishing only 8 mts of the nullah which was constructed on February 27th the day when the concrete mixture sample was taken for testing following complaints of substandard material being used.

However, Savio said the entire nallah as constructed before the work was stopped, ought to be demolished as it was quite evident that the same mixture was used for the entire length.
“I have asked for information under Right to Information and once I get that further action will definitely follow,” said Savio while pointing out to the test which showed that only 57 kg/cm2 was found when the required compression strength ought to have been 140 kg/cm2.
Similarly when the cement, sand and gravel ratio was supposed to be 1:2:4, the test indicated that it was 1:5:9 and where instead of sand the contractor had used black gavel dust.
“The actual success of this demolition will be when other people all over the State become vigilant and ask for quality test whenever any works are undertaken by contractors,” said Savio and demanded that the concerned contractor be blacklisted.
