According to SGPDA chairman, Cuncolim MLA Subhash Rajan Naik, the proposal came up for discussion with the chief minister who has assured to grant the necessary funds for the project.
“We are planning to construct a three storey building (G+2 structure) that will house a fish market on the ground floor, while offices and shops will be located on the upper floors. The chief minister has promised funds up to INR 25 crore for the project,” said Naik.
He clarified that the project was still at a conceptual stage and would require the coordination between their department and the fisheries department.
Naik said that the proposal of the department of fisheries to reconstruct the market was turned down, as the SGPDA members felt that handing over the land to the fisheries department would not be in the best interests of the authority.
“The SGPDA owns 10,000 sq m of prime land. Besides, as it lies in C2 zone, the permissible floor area ratio (FAR) is high. As the SGPDA is a cash-starved body, a project of this kind would help shore up the finances of the SGPDA (as the project would generate handsome revenue by way of rents from shops and offices),” Naik said.
