MAPUSA: Daryl Costa’s goal helped Calangute Association to get the better of Corps of Signals, 1-0 in the Round three match of GFA’s Professional league, at Duler Stadium, here, on Tuesday.
With Monday’s win Calangute Association moved to seven points while Corps of Signals are yet to open their account.
The all-important goal for Calangute came in the first session of play through the boots of Daryl Costa.
The Army men searching for their first points in the league started aggressively with their coach Eban Misquita watching from the stands due to CRS approval.
A costly defensive lapse by defender Amit Singh Tariyal in the 11th minute saw Calangute’s striker Chandan Govenkar anticipate the back pass but before any damage could be done keeper Binu Purushothaman dispossessed him.
Calangute finally got the opening goal which turned out to be the match-winner in the 45th minute when U-20 Mallik Mulla’s dangerous cross in the goal area struck the Signals defender and the ball came to Daryl Costa who slammed the ball into the goal to give his side the lead.
Gourav Kankonkar nearly doubled the lead in added time but his strong header saw keeper Binu dive full stretch to collect the ball before it could bulge the net.
Changing ends, Signals showed more urgency but in the 50th minute Vishnu Chetri`s rasping shot just missed entering the net narrowly.
Calangute had a chance to get the second goal and wrap up the match in the 65th minute but keeper Binu who was brilliant under the bar kept out Chandan`s low cross flashed across the goal for a corner before Malik could pounce onto it.
Lairellakpam and Pawan Thakur tried their luck from distance with some long rangers in the 76th and 79th minutes but a goal eluded Signals until the final whistle.
