Congress demands the withdrawal of the consent given for the expansion of the plant from 120 to 250 tonnes.
The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) spokesperson, Tulio De Souza, said the government has failed to understand that the plant has failed in its operations.
“Despite the plant being able to treat the existing garbage waste dumped at the plant the government has sanctioned Rs. 83 crores for expansion from 120 tonnes to 250 tonnes. We do not want the garbage plant at Saligao to turn out to be another Sonsoddo. The Saligao MLA is now trying to take mileage from this entire issue. Earlier he was in favour of the expansion during the cabinet meeting,” said Tulio.
“The current plant is overloaded as they are bringing in garbage from across North Goa. Initially it was supposed to cater to Saligao and Calangute constituency. The plant is unable to function to the maximum of its capacity due to the unsegregated waste being brought here. Let us not allow the Saligaonkars to be taken for granted and let us stand united,” he added.
If the government fails to listen to the plea of the people we will take to the streets and stop the permanent dumping of garbage at Saligao.
