PONDA: Ponda Police arrested one Debashish Danpath (23) from Jharkhand in connection with desecration of crosses in Marcaim cemetery on July 25 this year.
The accused was arrested in Jharkhand and was brought to Goa on a transfer remand.
On July 25, at least twelve crosses were desecrated in the cemetery of Fatima Chapel at Karanzal, in Marcaim. The miscreants had entered the graveyard by breaking open the metal gate.
While investigating the case, Ponda police got a lead that the accused was involved in the desecration of crosses. Police also learnt that the accused was working in a unit at the Marcaim Industrial Estate and was residing in a rented room in the village with two of his friends. The police further learnt that the accused was in Goa for two years.
After the desecration, the accused reportedly left for his native place in Jharkhand due to some health issues. On questioning his roommates, Ponda police learnt about his whereabouts in Jharkhand and accordingly a team consisting of PSI Bakre and two constables was dispatched to Jharkhand to arrest and bring the accused back to Goa.
Armed with an arrest warrant issued by a Ponda Judicial Magistrate First Class, the Ponda police team searched for the accused in the Naxalite infested areas of Jharkhand; and after a 15-day effort, the Ponda police team finally arrested the accused and brought him back to Goa. The Ponda police team was reportedly assisted by the local police in nabbing the accused.
It is learnt that in 2012, the accused was treated for some mental illness in Jharkhand.
