Booze party at Lohia Maidan angers locals; cops intervene

MARGAO: A shocking incident of Goan tourists having a booze party at the historic and revered Lohia Maidan occurred at Margao on Friday evening.

MARGAO: A shocking incident of Goan tourists having a booze party at the historic and revered Lohia Maidan occurred at Margao on Friday evening. 
A group of tourists who are employees of a company sat and enjoyed alcoholic drinks at Lohia Maidan on a busy Friday evening. Angered locals threatened to take the group to task, but the police intervened and dispersed the crowd and took the group away.
The incident occurred at around 5 in the evening when tourists were spotted drinking on Lohia Maidan. What angered the people more was that the tourists were Goans. 
According to information, a group of Goan employee had come down to the town and after having some games and other activities entered the Lohia Maidan. There they drank beers and after an hour even started singing and shouting loudly.
The youth were having booze sitting on the memorial of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia. The information of the same was sent to the police and after they arrived some of the youth fled the Maidan in desperation. One of the youth was nabbed by the police.
This was the very place from where the clarion call for the Revolution was made by Dr Ram Manohar Lohia and several had lost their lives in th Revolution. Ex-councillor Damu Shirodkar said that he was shocked to hear the incident.
“Such things shouldn’t be allowed and deterred soon and strict action against the persons who have been caught drinking is a must,” said Jai Damodar Association President Mahesh Dattaram Nayak. 
“The MMC has to deploy a permanent security guard 24 hours to protect this holy place,” he added.
