PANJIM: Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Sunday said that a 250-bedded COVID-19 facility will start operating at the South Goa District Hospital (SGDH) from September 19.
“With an aim to commission the newly designated COVID Hospital, inspected the premises with our team of doctors and official from Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (GSIDC). We shall start operations from next Saturday with 250 beds initially and later extend it to its full capacity of 556 beds in a phased manner,” he tweeted informing about the development.

At present, COVID-19 patients in the State are being treated at the ESI Hospital in Margao, Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Sub-District Hospital (SDH) in Ponda.
In the wake of rise in number of COVID-19 cases in the State, the new facility at SGDH would be made functional partially, Rane had told reporters on Saturday after visiting the facility.
About six days ago, Rane had said that after a joint consultation with Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, they will be converting the SGDH into a dedicated COVID Hospital with 400-500 beds capacity, in addition to ESIC and SDH, Ponda. The earlier plan to commission the hospital was on September 11.
The health minister has already held interactive discussion with the health officials to plan the functionality of the Hospital. Multi-tasking staff will be deployed for the patients handling at SGDH, two ambulances will be deployed at SGDH for shifting of critical patients to ESIC or GMC, when required, besides other services.
He also said that health authorities will continue to treat critical COVID patients at GMC, moderate COVID patients at ESIC and mild COVID patients at SGDH or SDH, Ponda.
