Three persons had a lucky escape with minor injuries when a speeding truck loaded with LPG cylinders turned turtle near Cortalim junction along the highway on Monday afternoon.
The situation turned tense for some time as two damaged cylinders began to leak, before fire fighters contained the leakage.
Traffic was also disrupted along the route as about 300 loaded cylinders were scattered all over the accident site.
According to Lakvinder Singh, one of the two cleaners who escaped unhurt in accident, the incident took place at around 3.15 pm as the truck (GA-02-T-8978) loaded with LPG cylinders was
“The truck was proceeding from Kundai Industrial estate to deliver cylinders to a gas agency in Vasco. Shortly after turning at the Cortalim junction, the steering of the truck got jammed and truck toppled,” said Singh.
The truck driver, one Hallapa, a native of Karnataka but presently residing in Vasco, injured his leg, while Singh and the other cleaner Balu escaped unhurt.
Fire brigades from Vasco and Verna rushed to the site and firemen rounded up all cylinders strewn around the truck, where they identified two leaking cylinders.
“Firemen immediately identified two damaged cylinder which were leaking and they placed them in a water catchment of the Zuari river near the highway. They also sprinkled water on other cylinders to rule out further leakage,” Vasco fire station incharge Bosco Ferrao told Herald.
After the cylinders were cleared from the road, traffic resumed along the highway and vehicles managed to pass by the ill-fated truck which had fallen in the middle of the road.
Verna police has registered a case and is investigating the case.
