PANJIM: The upcoming 250 tonnes waste treatment plant at Bainguinim would be in lines with the similar facility operational at Saligao, hinted the CCP Mayor.
The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has decided to seek consultation from Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt Ltd (HWTPL) that had set up the State’s first waste treatment facility at Saligao, which has been very successful.
Newly elected Panjim MLA Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate on Friday met City Mayor Uday Madkaikar to take stalk of pending works of the city. During the discussion, Monserrate was of the opinion that CCP should urge Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) to expedite the Bainguinim facility.
Madkaikar said that the priority for the MLA is to expedite the work of Bainguinim garbage treatment facility. “We would consult HWTPL, which has set up and are operating the Saligao plant successfully. We would take the company officials to the site and will seek their opinion,” he said.
The state-of-the art facility at Saligao was commissioned in May 2016. After initially handling 100 tonnes of waste, the facility will now expand its capacity to handling 250 tonnes.
As far as Bainguinim is concerned, after an initial tussle, CCP, during its special meeting held on September 13, 2017, resolved to hand over 1.71 lakh sq mtrs of land to GSWMC for setting up garbage treatment facility on a condition that government should give an undertaking that the land would be used for garbage facility and fix a time limit within which the project would be ready.
The land was acquired by CCP in 2009 and since then it is mired in legal battle.
With a capacity of 250 tonnes, the facility at Bainguinim would to handle the waste generated in five assembly constituencies of Tiswadi taluka – Panjim, Taleigao, St Cruz, St Andre and Old Goa.
