MARGAO: Repair works of the government primary school at Camral in Quepem taluka has been abandoned by the contractor as the government failed to pay his bills.
This is not the only school where the contractor has abandoned the repair works: repair works of three other schools, too, have been abandoned by the contractors. The abandoned schools are at Borimol, Gajanan and Chinchnagar.
The parents are angry that repair works are taking too long and that their children have been moved to to a rented building in the village.
The villagers say that the number of students in the government primary schools is already dwindling and to add to that the government is not being considerate and proactive as far as education infrastructure is concerned.
Camral resident Vinod Naik said, “The approach of the government towards education and allied infrastructure disheartening. This is the main reason why the parents are not interested in sending their kids to government schools.”
The former Quepem municipal chairperson Felix Fernandes said, “It was better to continue with the old structure of the school. The unplanned work here has only created problems for the occupants of this school. The government should attend to this and various schools.”
Acknowledging the work has been abandoned by the contractor due to non-payment of the bills,
Education Official Sanjay Naik Desai said, “The local MLA and Power Minister Nilesh Cabral is monitoring the work and has asked the concerned to immediately begin the work.”
