MARGAO: Taking a serious stance on transportation safety, GOACAN halted vehicles carrying electricity poles at Sirlim on the highway on Friday and expressed frustration over the oversight of an issue that poses risks to the lives of commuters.
Subsequently, the flying squad of the Directorate of Transport booked an offence against the vehicle owner.

Speaking to reporters, Roland Martins expressed concern over the transportation of electricity poles, highlighting violations of the Motor Vehicle Act and the endangerment of people’s lives.
It has been reported that the Directorate of Transport flying squad booked an offence against the vehicle with registration number GA-05 T 7007 for transporting eight protruding electricity poles from Honda Usgao to Betul in Salcete.
GOACAN has pointed out that despite the accident in August 2020 at Borim, where three Electricity Department employees lost their lives; the Department is ignoring the transportation of these poles, which is being carried out in non-Department vehicles in violation of the Motor Vehicle Act.
Martins stated that they have decided to write to the District Collector, urging directives to be issued to the Electricity Department, factory owners, contractors, traffic police, and the Directorate of Transport. The letter will emphasize that vehicles carrying protruding electricity poles in violation of the Motor Vehicle Act will not be permitted entry into the talukas of Ponda, Salcete, Mormugao, Sanguem, Quepem, Dharbandora, and Canacona with immediate effect.
“We must not forget that in August 2020 in Borim, three Electricity Department employees lost their lives due to the negligence of the Department in allowing the transportation of electricity poles in an unauthorized vehicle,” said Martins.
