VASCO: Goencho Avaaz on Saturday urged people of Goa to choose clean politics over BJP’s “model of sleaze” as Goa marks its Statehood Day on Sunday (May 30).
In a press release, Goencho Avaaz said, “As Goa marks its Statehood Day, there does not seem to be much to celebrate. The air of gloom and despondency that clouds Goa, goes way beyond the disruption and loss of lives wreaked by the raging, ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.”

Goencho Avaaz Convenor Captain Viriato Fernandes said, “Instead of mindlessly celebrating, this might be an appropriate time to look back on all that we have lost in the past few years. Besides our identity, our culture and our rights and status as sons and daughters of the soil, we seem to have lost something even more valuable – our moral compass and sense of direction as a community and a State.”
He said, “Today, we have reached the lowest point in our State’s evolution. If we are to get ourselves out of this pit, each of us will have to do our part and participate through a sea change in our minds, our hearts, our thoughts and our actions.”
GA President Swapnesh Sherlekar wondered what was there to celebrate for a State saddled with a government that came into power through “manipulative and undemocratic means”.
GA Secretary Ninio Correia said, “On Goa Statehood Day, we should introspect on our role in bringing clean politics to the forefront. It is our duty to question politicians and hold them accountable when they come begging for votes. It is our responsibility to pay heed to a political party’s ideology and the character of the politician before we cast our vote.”
