House collapses, roads submerged in Bicholim

A house collapsed at Bhavkai-Mayem while roads in various parts of Bicholim taluka were submerged as rains brought life to a grinding halt on Saturday.
Water from the overflowing rivers submerged the main road at Shantadurga high school circle, Bandarwada and the Mulgao main road, paralysing traffic along the routes.
The town wore a deserted look and panic-stricken shopkeepers at the Bicholim market downed their shutters, while residents feared the possibility of floods in the area later at night.
A house belonging to Surya Nagvekar collapsed at Bhavkai-Mayem. Mayem Sarpanch Tulsidas Chodankar visited the site and has requested the government to provide compensation to the affected family.
Meanwhile, mining sludge damaged two coconut plantations and two wells at Gavtad-Mulgao, causing a damage of about Rs 3 lakh.
Uprooting of trees was reported at many parts of Bicholim taluka and locals authorities are assessing the damages.
