BICHOLIM: Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar has assured that he would take steps to clean the Bicholim River, the same way the Walvanti River at Sanquelim is being cleaned up.
Speaking to Herald, Patnekar said that he has taken note of the pollution in Bicholim River and would soon come out with a solution.
“The pollution of Bicholim River is very serious and the way Sanquelim Walvanti River is being cleaned up, we would also take some steps to save this river,” Patnekar said adding, “If there is pollution in the river, being the MLA, I would see to it that this matter is taken seriously and steps are taken to clean the river.”
“Some ten to twelve years ago, the Irrigation Department had desilted the entire river spending around Rs 9 crore. The reason was to avoid flooding in the city. After this, there was no flooding in the city. Now the question is of pollution. So, I will try to clean the river after some days,” Patnekar said.
He said that he would rope in NGOs and other institutions to do this work.
Earlier, a Bicholim based environmentalist had sounded a warning bell demanding preservation of Bicholim River. “There is a report that Bicholim River is polluted right from Kudchirem to Bicholim and there are several factors for this. The condition of the river is very critical,” he said.
