VASCO: Slamming the State government as well as Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida of failing to organise any celebration or event in commemoration of Centenary Year of Vasco, the Goa unit of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Jose Philip D’Souza on Sunday informed that NCP would hold a public celebration in first weeks of January to mark the Centenary Year of city of Vasco.
“It was the duty of the Vasco MLA, the municipality and the State government to organise at least one event or celebration in view of Centenary Year of city of Vasco. This was needed to create awareness among the people about the importance of year 2017 which happens to be Centenary Year of city of Vasco, but since they have completely failed, the NCP has decided to hold a public celebration and the same will held in month of January 2018,” D’Souza said addressing a press conference at NCP office in Vasco.
D’Souza also accused Almeida of misusing the government machinery to stop all traditional events/functions at Vasco.
“Vasco is like a dead city today as nothing is happening here and whatever functions or events that people used to organise in the city are being stopped one by one using government machinery.,” he said.
Giving an example, he said, a Khariwado based club had started an all India level cycle race. However, since last few years the organisers had to stop this annual event as the traffic police under political pressure started refusing permission for road closer.
Similarly, he said, since last 25 years a group of people from Vasco used to organise ‘Beat show’ on New Year day, but last year under political pressure the Vasco police stopped the beat show sharp at 10 pm (within two hours of its commencement) and thus this year the organisers have decided not to organise this annual event.
