CARMONA: After several complaints of irregular water supply in the coastal village of Carmona, the Public Works Department (PWD) Water Supply Division officials recently visited Carmona to familiarise themselves with the water supply issues in the village.

Carmona Village Panchayat Sarpanch Allwyn Jorge accompanied the PWD Works Division Assistant Engineer Prasad Sakhardande on a tour of the village as per the list of grievances that had been earlier submitted to the PWD wherein it was drawn to their attention that the village had been receiving very low water pressure with some houses complaining of receiving dirty muddy water as they are located at the end section of the pipeline.
“Also, it was pointed out to the PWD AE Sakhardande that the interior roads have different sizes of pipes of cement and PVC,” stated the Sarpanch Allwyn requesting the Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao to direct the PWD to release more pressure for the village.
Allwyn added, “The PWD engineers say they restrict the pressure to the villagers due to the fear that the pipes might leak. This fear in their minds has made them to restrict the valve openings of the pipes supplying water to villages but they keep the valves for the hotels fully open. It’s proved that the villagers are second class citizens and hotels get priority. Upon our complaints, the PWD Department has marginally increased their gauge pressure to 1.3 bar which marginally increases to 1.5 bar at night.”
When contacted, AE Sakhardande admitted to having conducted a site inspection by touring and inspecting those Carmona village wards having water problems along with the sarpanch. The sarpanch requested PWD AE Sakhardande to keep the water pressure at a constant of 2 kg/sq cm and commission new water pipelines as some pipelines are old.
