MARGAO: South Goa Police, led by Superintendent of Police Arvind Gawas, has declared an all out war against criminals and are prepared to make life difficult for them by booking them for the smallest offence so that they end up spending most of the time in the courts.
“While earlier police used to overlook minor offences, I have now instructed them to book known criminals even for the slightest case so that they get fed up of spending their time in the courts by spending money on advocates to deal with those matters,” said Arvind Gawas.
He said the police force is going after two major gangs and one minor one in South Goa. “The very fact that we have not received any instructions, proves that these criminals do not enjoy any political support and were merely using it as a smokescreen,” he said.
Police sources disclosed that around 12 persons have been identified as notorious characters who have to be made to toe the line. While eight of them are known as history sheeters who have more than 5 cases registered against them for indulging in grievous criminal activities, the others are persons of bad character who have two or three cases registered against them and who indulge in fights and minor crimes.
Initially police are likely to act against Anwar Shaikh and Javed Shaikh who have been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons. While Anwar had three cases of assault including one of causing injuries with a koita registered against him at Margao Town Police Station, Javed Shaikh was arrested by the Colva Police for rape and is out on bail at the moment.
It is learnt that the police are exploring the possibilities of getting an order exterminating them from the South Goa District or getting them arrested under the National Security Act. Both these orders will have to be issued by the Collector and right now the police are busy preparing their cases against the two to get such an order.
Meanwhile, Colva Police have booked a case against Darshana Yadav for assaulting one Fidel who is reported to be the present girlfriend of Javed Shaikh.
