Suchita elected unopposed as QMC councillor

QUEPEM: Suchita Shirvaikar was elected unopposed as the councillor from Ward No. 3 (Women) of Quepem Municipal Council, on Saturday.

On Saturday, the last day for filing of nominations, 24 candidates filed 25 nominations. Out of the 67 nominations filed, 59 candidates are in fray to contest the civic elections.

Former chairperson and Congress Block Committee President Manuel Colaco filed nomination for Ward No. 8, which is General category; former Quepem MLA and minister Prakash Velip’s daughter filed nomination for Ward No. 9, which is reserved for Scheduled Tribes Women and General Secretary of BJP Block Committee Prasad Phaldesai filed nomination for Ward No. 4 (General), were among the 24 candidates. 

Unopposed candidate Suchita said that it all happened with the support of MLA and Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Babu Kavalekar and ward people. I will always stand by with my people for betterment and development of the ward. She also informed that she was the representative of the BJP party.

Colaco said, “As I represent Congress Party in Quepem, the party has given me the responsibility to field candidates in all the 13 wards of Quepem municipality and I have done it. My party is a national party and there is no meaning of taking a back step.”

“There were many things done by the Opposition to pressurise our candidates but all of them stood firm to contest,” Colaco said.

He also appealed to all the candidates, who say they are independent, that they should either support the Congress Party or BJP so that this election can be more meaningful.

Former minister and former Quepem MLA Prakash Velip said, “It’s time to put the new generation ideas and thoughts for betterment of the society. The educated people should support to bring in change. Today my daughter, who is well qualified and has lot of interest to do good for society, has filed nomination for Ward No. 4 (ST Women). I hope she will get good support.” 

Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Babu Kavlekar congratulated Suchita, after she was declared elected unopposed from Ward No. 3. 

Kavlekar also expressed confidence that BJP backed candidates will win the Quepem Municipal Council polls this time.

“Just like Suchita, candidates which we have backed are popular, and have been working for the people all along,” Kavlekar said.
