Wild animals, birds rescued in raid on Varca hall

Hall staff remanded to judicial custody till March 14; Search to nab property owners launched

MARGAO: The South Goa Forest Division rescued wild animals and birds during a raid on an open air hall in Varca. Range Forest Office mobile squad, Margao received information about the illegal captivity and display of wild animals and birds at an open-air hall at Palkutt. 

Accordingly, Vishal V Surve, SDFO Quepem, Prakash Naik, RFO Mobile Squad & staff of Mobile Squad Range Margao under the guidance of Anil Shetgaonkar DCF South, conducted a search of the open air hall and recovered wild animals and birds.

A White Bellied Sea Eagle, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Black Kite, seven Plum Headed Parakeet, Vernal Hanging Parrot, 12 Black Headed Munia, and six Rose Ringed Parakeets were rescued. The above species are protected under Schedule I, II, and IV of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

The staff of the open air hall involved in handling, shifting, and hiding the aforementioned birds and animals has been arrested and produced before Judicial Magistrate First Class III Additional Court, Margao and remanded to judicial custody till March 14. 

Nagraj Achari, Dinesh Kumar, Sameer Aaind, Soma Kandulna and Pyari Kerketta conducted the raid.

However, the owners of said property are yet to be traced and a search has been launched to nab them.

The seized birds and animals were later released into the wild.
