MARGAO: South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) has hit back at the wholesale fish traders on the Margao market for the pathetic and unhygienic conditions, accusing them of releasing fish water in the open despite strict warnings.

SGPDA member secretary, Vinod Kumar has stated that the fish traders are also to be blamed for the mess at the wholesale fish market.
“It has been witnessed that the traders in the market are releasing the fish water openly, despite requesting them not to do so. The pathetic conditions over here with regard to stink and dirt is because of discharge fish water in an open area inside the market,” he stated.
He appealed to the fish traders to cooperate with the authorities in order to make the market the best in the state of Goa, as he visited the market and took stock of the prevailing situation.
SGPDA has taken strict action against the fish traders who are involved in releasing the fish water inside the compound, but they continue to create the mess, resulting in smell.
He further informed that the authority is trying hard to do its best in the maintenance of the market, but at the same time needs support and cooperation from the fish traders.
“The first phase of the under-construction wholesale fish market will be completed in another six months, and it will be opened for business activities immediately,” informed Kumar.
The authority has decided to call a meeting wherein all the issues pertaining to the wholesale fish market will be discussed and the grievances of the fish traders will be taken into consideration.
